Happy Employees Don’t Happen by Chance

Why understanding how people think matters more than ever.

A recent article in The Times was full of interesting statistics about the value of happy staff.

For instance, research suggests only around a quarter of the global workforce feels happy at work, with UK employees among the least satisfied in the G20. Phrases like “toxic workplace” and “Sunday Scaries” have become part of everyday language.

Mark Price, former Managing Director of Waitrose and Deputy Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, has long argued that employee happiness is not a luxury but a commercial necessity. During his time at John Lewis, the organisation was built around a simple but demanding principle: the happiness of its employees. Happy, engaged employees equal happy, satisfied customers, which leads to a thriving, profitable business.

Price says, “True workplace happiness will always be a two-way street. Employers must create a supportive environment, but individuals must take responsibility … for nurturing their own sense of fulfilment.”

Nearly every leader would say they want to facilitate both. But how do you actually do that?

At Miradorus, our Leadership programmes are underpinned by the Whole Brain® Thinking methodology, which helps participants become more aware of their own thinking preferences, as well as those of the people they work and interact with. This self-awareness helps them better utilise their strengths, understand their blind spots, and importantly, appreciate what other people’s thinking preferences bring to any situation. In turn, it better equips them to act outside of their own preferred thinking preferences in order to get things done.

Having a team complete the Herrmann Brain Dominance® assessment generates an individual profile for every member, detailing each person’s overall thinking preference, both in “normal” circumstances and under pressure. By understanding their thinking preferences, employees are empowered to nurture their own sense of fulfilment.

The result isn’t superficial harmony. It is something more durable: clarity and trust. Employees feel they can be their authentic selves and contribute without pretending to be someone else.

Having happy employees isn’t about creating “warm fuzzies” to balance the “Sunday Scaries”; it’s about giving your team practical tools that deliver a guaranteed boost to their happiness and performance simultaneously.
